Janna has been devoted to music and the flute for most of her life. Growing up in a musical family, she was surrounded by music from birth - her father was a professional singer and her mother a keen pianist. As children Janna and her siblings were taught to sing & hold a part on their own, which she now realises was invaluable musical education.
Once Janna discovered the flute, she was hooked for life! She first learned the basics with Janice Gillard, then soon moved on to Michael Axtell, followed by a period of intense learning with Averil Williams at the Guildhall School of Music in London, while she was also taking a Degree in Music at the City University, London, close by. Since then Janna also studied with Patricia Morris, Geoffrey Gilbert & Peter Lloyd.
Janna's musical career has taken several routes - she started teaching the flute early on whilst building her reputation in both the UK and Germany, freelancing with many different orchestras and chamber ensembles, touring all around Europe, sometimes as a soloist, sometimes in orchestras or small ensembles. Janna has also spent some time in the recording studio working on film sessions, background music and other recordings, and also appeared on WDR3 radio in Germany with fellow flautist Camilla Hoitenga. Janna was Principal Flute for the touring company Pimlico Opera for many years, and additionally played for Grange Park Opera for 10 years.
In the last 18 years Janna has returned more to teaching, and both adults and children are benefitting from her experience. She founded a flute ensemble in London together with colleague Kate Grace, which then inspired them to start a flute course, Flute School London, which is now in its 10th successful year. This year Janna had to cancel the Flutes in France course at Monplaisir but has booked dates for next May instead. She has taken several Flute Days around the country and has taught on the very successful eflutefest which took place during the strictest part of lockdown.
